The first festival in Romania to bring live music in the city’s Central Park goes on a third edition in Cluj-Napoca, between the 29th June and the 5th July. Jazz in the Park took scale this year, and the director of the festival, Alin Vaida, explains the evolution:
It is natural for an event organizer to desire a bigger and a more complex project. For the third edition, not only will we use almost the whole Central Park, but we will also organize concerts in three other locations in town. Desiring not to overlap too many activities, we divided them on a full week’s time.
The Central Park will have 3 scenes: the Main Stage, on the central alley of the park, where 12 concerts will be held, Youth Stage, behind the Casino building, where will be a jazz and jazz influences music contest, and Chill-Out Stage, in the hammock zone, where a series of DJs will play their music during the day.
Beside the zones dedicated to music, the festival will welcome Cluj residents with numerous other activities and places: art exhibitions, places to read, a meeting point for bikers, a playground for children. Moreover, Jazz in the Park will host, like in the previous years, a big craft fair and terraces of the greatest Cluj pubs.
News for 2015 is the <Bookfest partnership, which resulted in hosting the summery edition of the book fair at Jazz in the Park.
Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen and Tango with Lions – a couple of the first confirmed artists at Jazz in the Park
The organizers have announced the first confirmed guests for the main stage in the Central Park, where the access will be free: Hilde Louise Asbjørnsen, Tango with Lions, Tiptil and Sebastian Spanache Trio.
Born in a small town on the north-western coast of Norway, Hilde Louise was passionate by music since she was a little child. Hilde composed her own songs, being influenced by great jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole. In 2007, the artist joined Koop, the well-known electronic jazz Norwegian duet, with which she collaborated and accompanied in tours for 2 years. The artist about whom the press wrote is “two parts Monroe and one part Holiday” will be present for the first time in Cluj-Napoca at Jazz in the Park.
The indie/alternative band Tango with Lions was officially formed in 2007 by Kat, a young musician who has had numerous collaborations as a bassist and vocalist with the indie scene in Greece. Their debut album was received with great enthusiasm by critics, while their single “In a Bar” recorded an impressive number of visualisations on Youtube. Their second album, “A Long Walk”, was voted the best album of the year in 2013. For the first time in Romania, Tango with Lions promised a dynamic show on the main stage of the festival.
The Romanian band Tiptil, founded in 2009 by a few former members of Baba Novac band, was joined in short time by Silvana Helal, the vocalist of the band, who gives voice to the sophisticated sound of the instruments. The effervescent and dynamic musical style of the glam-punk-jazz band, brought them the trophy of the “Stufstock Newcomers” section, of the 2010 Stufstock Festival.
Sebastian Spanache Trio is one of the trios which formed and conducted the new generation of jazz musicians, contributing to the consolidation of jazz music by improvising. The musical influences are composed by diverse styles, often suggesting an atmosphere of ambient or electronic music. In 2014, Sebastian Spanache Trio were awarded for their originality with the grand trophy of the International Jazz Festival Johnny Răducanu in Brăila.
Aside from the Central Park, the organizers are preparing three new locations for the festival. The scene prepared on the Grigorescu beach, on the Someș Shore will hold on the 1st and on the 2nd of July six concerts, the space being arranged like other European urban beaches. For both the amateurs of jazz and classical music, the Hungarian Opera will host two concerts which will take place on the 30th June and 2nd July, on ticket basis.
Surprise event for the 1st of Mayi
The Jazz in the Park organisers are happy to announce one more event by Fapte Association this year, for the 1st of May. The event will propose to Cluj residents an alternative to spend their traditional free day for the 1st of May, alternative prepared with the same ingredients like Jazz in the Park: good music, clean air, interesting activities and free access. Details will be announced soon.
Free entrance at Jazz in the Park
The access at the events at Jazz in the Park is free, except for the concerts held at the Hungarian Opera.
The evolution and diversification of the activities proposed by the festival this year is owed to the fact that the organisers looked for new funding sources. “Last year we applied with the “Jazz in the Park” project for a lot of funding, and in the case of some, we had success, like the grants earned from EEA Grants and FDSC. Also, the success of last year’s edition and the nominalisation in the European final stage of Festival Awards helped a lot in the discussions with potential sponsors.”
This year’s official partners are Staropramen and BCR, and the institutional partner is Cluj-Napoca City Hall. Jazz in the Park 2015 supporters are Bosch and CSI companies.
