Over 23.000 people decided to join in on the 2nd edition of Jazz in the Park, the first festival in Romania to bring good music in Cluj-Napoca’s Central Park. The event organized by Fapte Association (Asociaţia Fapte) took place between the 4th and 6th of July and consisted of ten concerts, an outdoor flea market with over 100 salesmen, activities for children, adults and… a good dose of relaxation in the hammocks, on blankets or right on the grass.

During the day, our visitors (most of them from Cluj, but also people based in other regions, from Timişoara and Iaşi to Braşov and Bucharest) indulged in various games, tested the Pegas bicycles and the motorized eBikes from Bosch, enjoyed a good book, chit chatted with friends and took a stroll through the flea market, where they could find antiques, fashion and handmade products. A number of 107 merchandisers chose to showcase their goods in the market space: everything from artisanal jewelry and traditional Romanian produce to clothes, bio cosmetics, great music on vinyl and vintage furniture could be found. The PMA relaxation zone was by far the most popular spot for our diurnal participants, whose ears were delighted by Lights Out together with Nuages Quartet, Disco Sigaretta and Cercul Întreg.
Youth@Cluj-Napoca 2015 - European Youth Capital organized a board game championship, “Cu cărţile pe faţă” campaign brought us a library and the hammocks from Marea Hămăceală were always gently swinging somebody’s daydreaming. The fashion show “Rochia calendar- Vara” by creator Călina Langa took place Saturday near the fountain and Sunday, the Professionals in Press Association Cluj (Asociaţia Profesioniştilor din Presă Cluj- APCC) hosted the first edition of the APCC Foto Salon in the Casino building.

The concerts on the stage installed in the main lane of the park started Friday with Luz Azul, a Bossa Nova and Jazz band from Serbia, only to continue with an exceptional recital by Teodora Enache and Lars Danielsson, who brought smiles to the faces of music lovers. The first evening ended with a performance by Jazzybirds, a band from Cluj which is definitely on its way to the top.

Saturday night’s opening was seized by the youngest band in the festival, Youvenis, come all the way from Întorsura Buzăului. Even though still in high school, the members of Youvenis managed to demonstrate that quality jazz knows no age: their flame was met with applause and ovations from spectators.

JazzyBIT, from Timişoara, said to be another band that likes “to fiddle” with jazz, followed their act and also won over the hearts of the crowd. The main concert- that of Moonlight Breakfast- gathered a crowd of 7000 people that danced and sang every step of the way, be it in front of the stage, in the relaxation area, next to the pavilion or on the Casino terrace. To keep the good music going, next up was a jam session organized at La Cizmărie.

Loungerie II was Sunday’s musical soiree’s energized opening act, followed by Mara & Kult Studio Artists- exceptional voice and memorable interpretation. At the same time, the Hungarian Opera hosted the only ticketed event in the festival- Melanie Pain’s exceptional concert. Voice of Nouvelle Vague, Pain mesmerized her crowd with an impeccable performance, laid back attitude and typically French charm. The closing Les Elephants Bizarres concert was held on the stage in Central Park and thousands of people got up on their feet to dance and jump around.

We’re happy to have had enthusiastic people by our side; people that have helped us bring to thousands of visitors the gift of beautiful music in an amazing park, the way a city that will be the European Youth Capital next year deserves, a city which, we hope, will also be the European Cultural Capital in 2021. We thank our partners, especially those of Cluj-Napoca City Hall, without which this festival wouldn’t have been possible and we are also very thankful to the journalists, who have promoted us constantly. We also want to say “Thank you!” to the participants for every time they cheered us on and for helping us make a wonderful event in a top class location in maximally civil conditions”, declared Alin Vaida, festival director.

The organizing team was made up of 32 people aided by 80 enthusiastic volunteers and the events budget was 50.000 euro. The festival participants expressed their impressions through social networks- the Jazz in the Park Facebook page registered a reach of over 300.000 people during the three festival days with a peaking point of 120.000 people Sunday.

Everyone who enjoyed this event was able to contribute until the 31st of August to the Jazz in the Park Fund, launched by the Fapte Association (Asociaţia Fapte) and the Cluj Community Foundation (Fundaţia Comunitară Cluj) in order to encourage social implication through music. Donations can be made by sending a text message at 8840 (valid for Vodafone, Orange and Cosmote networks) for which you shall be charged 2 euro. To encourage civic spirit, the organizers have also prepared a prize for the charitable: one of them has the chance to win a Pegas bike especially designed for Jazz in the Park.

Jazz in the Park is an event organized by Fapte Association (Asociaţia Fapte), a group that focuses mainly on cultural and educational domains. The association’s activity started in 2006 with career centered events through which youths were given a chance to discover their calling. It continued with the development of several cultural projects meant to offer communities new perspectives and to make them make better decisions in the benefit of their members.
